Manchester City are getting closer to their dream treble. After reaching the FA Cup final, the next difficult step awaits them – a league game at home against first-placed Arsenal.
They’ve never been so close! Manchester City has secured their qualification to the FA Cup final this weekend, they are 4 points behind first placed Arsenal in the Premier League (but have 2 games less) and a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid awaits them. Can Pep Guardiola’s team repeat Ferguson’s legendary success?
A win over Sheffield United
Riyad Mahrez, who has been more of a substitute in recent weeks, contributed to the FA Cup final with his three goals.
Pep Guardiola spared several mainstays in the semi-final of the English Cup. Kevin de Bruyne, Rodri and goalkeeper Ederson also sat on the bench.
The Citizens will face either Brighton or city rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final on July 3 at Wembley.
Will Manchester City win the treble?
Manchester City are currently showing great form and are brimming with confidence on the pitch. However, they have a very tough schedule ahead of them in the coming weeks.
The historic treble, which only Manchester United managed to complete in the history of English football in 1999, is still in play. If City want to achieve this unique achievement, they cannot afford to falter in the next few games.
Guardiola has let it be known that winning the treble is almost impossible. He believes it will be most important to focus on individual matches now. However, he himself must be aware that a possible treble is really up in the air.
The next step for the English champion will be to put in the best possible performance against still-first-placed Arsenal. The outcome of the match will be really important for the future course in the Premier League.
Key semi-final with Real Madrid
After Manchester City overcame Bayern in an attractive match, a rematch of last year’s semi-final awaits them in the Champions League. Back then, they failed to secure a completely schoolboyish end to the game and lost their progression in the final minutes of the double header.
Pep Guardiola is still trying to find a way to the club’s most prestigious trophy together with his players. He has come very close in recent years, with his team reaching the semi-finals for the third time in a row.
