Will it do them any good? Juventus appeals points deduction but realistically faces even harsher punishment
The Italian club Juventus Turin has appealed to the Supreme Court of Sport over a 15-point deduction it collected for accounting fraud. What punishment does Juventus still realistically face?
The Italian club Juventus Turin has appealed to the Supreme Court of Sport over a 15-point deduction it collected for accounting fraud. What punishment does Juventus still realistically face?
In recent months, Juventus has been under investigation for fraudulent player transfers between 2018 and 2020. The club’s management illegally took commissions and reported false profits to investors. It should be added that this case has been under investigation for quite some time.
Last year, the club was acquitted of all charges, but now the penalties have fallen anyway. Pavel Nedved was also part of the whole case, who officially parted ways with Juventus a few days ago.
The former Czech international was banned for eight months and the former Juventus officials did not escape punishment either.
The club itself received a 15-point deduction. However, in addition to the eleven current or former officials, even the players themselves face penalties.
After the deduction of points, Juventus subsequently dropped to thirteenth place, a move up the table could have been taken care of in the recent match against Monza.
However, the Turin giant fell 0:2 at home, and even then the head referee Gianluca Aureliano did not concede the visitors’ first goal. Gianluca Caprari was the author of the goal. Juventus are still in 13th place after the 20th round with 23 points.
It should be noted that Juventus’ management has also been investigated by UEFA. The Italian club is suspected of having announced a pay cut for players during the coronavirus pandemic, even though it paid them money secretly outside the accounting records.
As we wrote in a previous article, Juventus can fear the worst. Realistically, the Turin giant could face a similar punishment to that of 2006. That is to say, revocation of the title and relegation.
Anyway, as far as the point deduction is concerned, Juventus have announced on their official website that they have appealed against this decision. And to the highest court of sport. But whether it will do the club any good is a big question, and we will know the answer in the coming weeks.
