Xabi Alonso is the big coaching discovery of 2023. He is the main architect of the success of Bayer Leverkusen, who are currently top of the Bundesliga. And logically, he is in demand. However, the Spanish coach could only go to three clubs.

Already during his playing career there were signals that Xabi Alonso would be a great coach. To be sure, he had a great training from José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti or Pep Guardiola. It was the Spanish coach who spoke highly of his charge.

When Xabi Alonso took over Bayer Leverkusen last year, he had only had an engagement with Real Sociedad’s B-team, which he had pulled up to the second league. However, he immediately dispelled any doubts. He pulled a team languishing in 17th place in the Bundesliga to sixth place and into the semi-finals of the Europa League.

In the new season, where he got the team “from scratch”, he shows his quality. Werkself lead the Bundesliga, play extremely attractive offensive football and it is no wonder that there is a lot of interest in Xabi Alonso.

There is much speculation that he should replace Carlo Ancelotti on the Real Madrid bench. However, this is denied in Germany, as Alonso has signed a contract until 2026. But there is an exception.

According to Bild newspaper, Alonso has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for the three clubs where he has been a player – Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. He should not be released to the other clubs.

This clause is to be in place from the summer, just when Real want to replace him with Ancelotti. So it will be interesting to see if Los Blancos can get him or if the talented coach will stay in Germany.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has urged him to do so. He, of course, would like to keep the Spanish coach for as long as possible and is encouraging him to try and win some trophies with the club before he leaves. Because the shift will definitely come, the only question is when.
