Will he challenge Alcaraz? Prestigious Tournament at Queen’s Club Drawn
Starting tomorrow, tennis fans’ eyes will be on England. The tournament has been held regularly at the Queen’s Club since 1890 and this year’s edition has already been drawn. Neither Andy Murray nor defending champion Matteo Berretini were among the eight seeded players. Already in the first round there could have been some very interesting duels.
The traditional tennis event at the Queen’s Club starts a fortnight before Wimbledon. It is, by the way, only 6 kilometres away from the venue.
In the past, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick have all triumphed on the grass courts of the Queen’s Club. But Andy Murray holds the most titles and already knows his opponent for the opening round.
Andy Murray
The five-time champion is understandably one of the most interesting names at this tennis event. The fate has not been kind to him. The British player will face the top-seeded Autralan Alex de Minaur. He played the quarter-finals in Hertogenbosch this week and has a positive record of 3:1 against Murray, including three matches in the last year.
Andy Murray, however, is playing in great form, especially on grass. His opening match against his Australian opponent will be one of the highlights of the first few days at Queen’s Club.
Two-time defending champion Berrettini is also not among the seeds and his opening match will not be a walk in the park either. He will play against Finland’s Ruusuvuori, who went even further than de Minaur at the Hertogenbosch tournament which ends today. He was only knocked out by the local Griekspoor in the semi-finals.
Will Lehecka play Alcaraz?
Jiri Lehecka recorded his first career win on grass a week ago. He is slowly climbing up the rankings and will continue his progress if he beats Spain’s Davidovich Fokina at the Queen’s Club opener. He will be just three places away from that on the rankings from tomorrow.
However, a win will bring another interesting bonus. In case of success in the first round, the Czech tennis player is likely to play the next round with the tournament’s number one Carlos Alcaraz. The latter will have a match with a qualifier at the start.
Rune and first success on grass?
Young Dane Holger Rune will enjoy a playable draw as the tournament’s number two. Which is of course a plus for him, especially because of his lack of experience on the fastest surface. In the first round, he will meet world number 40 Cressy of France.
He had a very decent record on grass last year but is struggling this year. He has now lost ten matches in a row.
The number three seed will be Taylor Fritz at Queen’s Club. The American is good on grass and has a chance for a successful rematch of last year’s French Open against Spain’s Zapata Miralles in his first match.
It will be a question of how the American Tiafoe performs in the tournament. The Stuttgart-based Jiri Lehecka’s conqueror will play the final at the local Boss Open today.
What is clear is that his opponent at the Queen’s Club will be Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round. And the 27-year-old Dutchman can do it on the London grass, he reached the semi-finals here last year.
