Will Hamilton win his eighth world title? Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is clear on that, what did he say?
Will Lewis Hamilton win his eighth world title? That’s one of the reasons Hamilton continues to race in the first place. And yes, it’s no small goal, but according to him and Toto Wolff, it’s still certainly realistic, though not this season. What did the Mercedes boss say about the seven-time champion?
Will Lewis Hamilton win his eighth world title? That’s one of the reasons Hamilton continues to race in the first place. And yes, it’s no small goal, but according to him and Toto Wolff, it’s still certainly realistic, though not this season. What did the Mercedes boss say about the seven-time champion?
The queen of motorsport has entered a new era at the stroke of this season, not only sportingly but also technically.
Some teams have coped with this transition better, some less well, and Mercedes is one of the teams that has not entered the new season very well.
And especially Briton Hamilton, who complained about the poor handling of his car or the lack of downforce, especially in the first half of the season.
Gradually, however, Mercedes managed to get closer to the top two teams. Hamilton himself has then scored five podium finishes in a row since the Canadian Grand Prix. The 37-year-old currently sits sixth in the championship, having amassed 180 points to date.
Hamilton will definitely not win the championship this year, as Max Verstappen managed to defend his championship title from last season.
However, the Mercedes boss believes that one of the best drivers of all time will succeed in the years to come, and that his teammate George Russell will also become champion. In his response, he also describes the relationship between Hamilton and Russell.
Wolff’s statement
“George is a great personality, so the time when he will win races and fight for the title is yet to come. He’s absolutely got it in him. But in the meantime, Lewis (Hamilton) can win the title,” Wolff said in an interview with Channel 4, quoted by Racing News 365.
Wolff confirmed his earlier words that he still believes Hamilton can achieve a record eighth world title. He also confirmed that the seven-time champion is currently acting as a mentor to his younger teammate.
“It’s based on respect, I guess that’s how I would describe their relationship. The respect of a rookie who realises that his teammate is the best driver of all time, along with Michael (Schumacher), and the respect Lewis sees in George,” Wolff explained.
“In terms of talent, age and growing up – and in a way, as strange as it sounds because your teammate is your first rival – Lewis acts as a mentor to George and he in turn takes on the role of the young lion,” he continues.
“They both still have ambitions to beat their teammate and win races and championships and I think that dynamic works very well together,” he concluded.
