In a very engaging interview with Corriere della Sera, Lewis Hamilton talked about his ambition to win the title, his fight against racism and revealed that he is a Ferrari fan. However, things are not the best with his prospects at the moment, he also responded to a question about a potential retirement.
At the moment, Hamilton is only sixth in the drivers’ championship with 50 points and is already 75 points behind leader Max Verstappen. However, in an interview with Corriere della Serra, he said that he still believes in winning the title.
“Of course I believe it, because it’s not just a question of records or titles. I want to win so that I can continue my work (diversity, racism – ed.), F1 is not what it used to be. It used to be that you left the garage, raced and then went home. Today, F1 is more conscious, helps shape opinions and is in the good hands of an Italian (Stefano Domenicali – ed.),” Hamilton admitted in an interview.
Hamilton also noted that he still hasn’t stopped believing in his team, even though it looked like it was in trouble for at least the first five races. Mercedes was struggling significantly with porpoising at the time, and Hamilton often complained about the different and completely inadequate setup of his monoposto, coupled with difficult handling.
It wasn’t until the new technical package Mercedes brought to Barcelona that the Mercedes W13 was able to make some amends. Moreover, the Mercedes driver remarked that he was not lucky at all this year. In addition to the frustration of a not-so-great car, he is regularly beaten by teammate George Russell.
“I’ve been with them for ten years. I know how they work, I know their culture. We win and lose together. They’re very motivated, they put their soul into it to get us back to the top,” Hamilton says with determination.
In the interview, Hamilton was also asked about the possibility of retiring. “It’s possible I won’t win the title this year, but I’m still very happy to be racing. Maybe one day I won’t be able to take the pressure anymore, I’ll be tired, but that day hasn’t come yet.”
Moreover, the seven-time world champion is using F1 as a kind of tool to promote diversity, equality and fight racism. However, he says he has not yet been very successful in doing this, or rather, he is not doing enough in this area of Formula 1.
“I’ve tried to do a lot of things, but the improvement comes in really small steps. This is not a priority for many teams and although Formula 1 is becoming more and more aware of this, we still have to push hard to make a difference,” the 37-year-old explained.
Hamilton concluded by supporting the work of Ferrari and Charles Leclerc himself, who lost the victory in Monaco due to a flawed strategy and poor communication by the Italian team. He also revealed that he is a Ferrari fan.
And although Mercedes is his family, if someone else should win the title this year, Hamilton will be happy if it is Leclerc and the Maranello stable.
