Slovak midfielder Jan Gregus’ contract in San Jose has expired and he became a free agent in the new year. The former Baník Ostrava player is expected to return to Europe after four years. The thirty-one-year-old midfielder is wanted by Scottish giants Rangers, where he could become a replacement for Finnish midfielder Glen Kamara.
The Slovakian midfielder spent four years overseas with Minnesota United and San Jose Earthquakes. He appeared in 87 games in Major League Soccer, scoring two goals and adding 20 assists.
His contract in San Jose expired at the end of last year, and there was no extension. The former Jablonec midfielder would like to return to Europe after four years. And the first interested parties have already signed up for his services.
Specifically, Rangers from the Scottish city of Glasgow. Manager Michael Beale would like to strengthen his squad in the winter to take on city rivals Celtic in the title fight. Rangers are nine points behind their rival.
And among the first signings to be eyed is Jan Gregus, who would come for free. But his services are also being sought by French side Rennes, who Rangers management will have to fight.
Central midfielder is a position that Beale must strengthen as foreign suitors are circling around Glen Kamara.
Kamara is being courted by Nantes in France and Salernitana in Italy. However, the priority for the Scottish side is to keep their key player. Even the player himself is not pushing for a transfer, he is happy at Rangers.
The former assistant to Steven Gerrard imagines that Gregus could form a strong pairing with Kamara in central midfield. Either way, for the Nantes management, Kamara’s arrival is a priority.
However, the question remains whether the Finnish international will want to fight for France’s salvation. Or will he stay in Scotland, where he will help Rangers in their title fight with Celtic.
