Will Alex Pereira go for another UFC belt after his win over Prochazka? His partner Teixeira hints at a possible move to heavyweight
11. november, Alex Pereira made history again. He defeated Jiri Prochazka and became UFC champion for the second time. After dominating the middleweight division, he became the king of the welterweight division. To make matters worse, there is also the possibility of him trying to dominate the heaviest weight class.
11. november, Alex Pereira made history again. He defeated Jiri Prochazka and became UFC champion for the second time. After dominating the middleweight division, he became the king of the light heavyweight division. To make matters worse, there is also the possibility of him trying to dominate the heaviest weight class.
We can call him the king of Madison Square Garden. Alex Pereira was the only fighter in UFC history to be in the main event twice. In his combat sports career overall, he has fought four times in the New York arena, winning four times by KO/TKO.
By defeating Jiri Prochazka, he became only the ninth UFC fighter to dominate two weight classes, needing only seven fights to do so. No one has accomplished this feat faster, and the competition is not small.
Names worth noting include Randy Couture, B.J. Penn, Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, Georges St-Pierre, Amanda Nunes and Henry Cejudo.
To make matters worse, Pereira may try to make more history. As soon as he beat Prochazka, speculation began about his move to heavyweight. After all, he has a huge physique, he doesn’t look very small in photos with other heavyweights.
Plus, we don’t know what’s next for him. He was supposed to fight Jamahal Hill, but he’s still going to be recovering from his injury for a while and besides, he’s in trouble with the law. Will he wait or will he accept another challenge?
Pereira and the UFC heavyweight title? Teixeira has spoken
Alex Pereira and the heavyweight division? “It’s too early to think about it. It’s all about the process,” expressed Brazilian countryman and training partner Glover Teixeira on the Trocacao Franca podcast, according to MMA Fighting.
“Alex is a disciplined professional. That’s why he was able to drop down to middleweight. It wouldn’t be easy for anyone to do what he has done. Few people can fight in the UFC, let alone win a title. But to do what he’s done, to throw down as much as he did? It was brutal,” Teixeira said.
“If Pereira were to move up to heavyweight, he would change his diet and training routine outside of camp to put on mass. He’s around 105 kilograms now and I think he could get to 111.5 kilograms, but no more. If he got to 110, that would be ideal,” he added.
It’s worth noting that the heavyweight situation is a bit muddled. The king is Jon Jones, who was supposed to fight Stipe Miocic, but got injured. Instead of Miocic going into action with someone else, a fight for the interim title was arranged between Sergey Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall, which the latter dominated.
Aspinall is asking for both Jones and Miocic, he wants to fight them before they’re done. However, UFC boss Dana White is still pushing for a Jones vs Miocic duel.
