Why is Courtois the best goalkeeper in the world? The following video will convince you
Those who haven’t watched Real Madrid all season and have only seen the Champions League final were blown away by the performance of Thibaut Courtois. However, Los Blancos fans are used to such performances, as the Belgian long-man has been delivering them steadily for the second season.
Those who haven’t watched Real Madrid all season and have only seen the Champions League final were blown away by the performance of Thibaut Courtois. However, Los Blancos fans are used to such performances, as the Belgian long-man has been delivering them steadily for the second season.
When Thibaut Courtois arrived at Real Madrid in 2018, he had a very difficult position. He pushed the fans’ favourite Keylor Navas out of the goal, which made Los Blancos supporters give him a “hard time”.
At the same time, his performances were pretty bad and he faced a lot of criticism. His transfer seemed to be a big fiasco. But before the next season, Navas left, which put pressure on Courtois, and he played 20 games in the season (10 La Liga, 7 CDR, 3 LM) despite being the number two.
The Belgian goalkeeper thus consolidated his position as number one, gained confidence and slowly recovered his lost form. In his very second season, he made a huge rise. His performances helped Real Madrid to the La Liga title and he kept improving.
Last season he was in great form. Injury-riddled Real Madrid, when often only 11 A-team players were available, made it to the Champions League semi-finals and Los Blancos were fighting for the title until the last round.
But over the summer, it was as if Courtois jumped to an even higher level. He found family peace and great support in girlfriend Mischel Gerzig, whom, incidentally, he proposed to last week. He has improved his footwork tremendously on the pitch and at times looked virtually invincible.
Several of his stunning saves saved Real Madrid from conceding, and he often held his team up in the final minutes. For example, he made a key save in the quarter-final against Chelsea when Rüdiger’s header was saved, and a few minutes later Real reduced the score to 3-1 and sent the match into extra time.
Lack of respect
The performance in the final then went around the world, Courtois practically single-handedly dragged Real to victory in the Champions League. A lot of fans started to wonder how he could have put in such a performance, he’s been putting in performances all season, unfortunately not many neutral fans follow La Liga, which is what Courtois was alluding to.
“I don’t think I’m respected enough, especially in England. I really wanted to win today to get some respect. In March, a magazine didn’t put me in the top 10 goalkeepers. I’m not saying I have to be first, but not being in the top 10 is strange. After my first year in Madrid, a lot of people laughed at me, but now I’m here as a winner,” said a delighted Courtois after the final.
He was even ranked a ridiculous ninth in the goalkeeper category in the FIFA The Best poll. Courtois is one of the most underrated footballers in the world, but for good reason. In fact, he is currently the best goalkeeper in the world, as the following video will convince you.
