Why do we love football? Because of games like the one we saw on Monday

Two games, 240 minutes of net time, 14 goals, 1 penalty shootout, that was Monday at the European Football Championship. France as the biggest favourite finished with the Swiss, the Croats with the Spanish.

Already the first goal of the Spain vs. Croatia match indicated that it was going to be a wild day. Pedri’s “little” home was not handled by Unai Simón and it was an own goal a la Ondrej Kolar.

Spain turned the tide in the second half with three goals and seemed to have broken the game, but the Croatians did not give up and their goals in the 85th and 92nd minutes sent the game into extra time. The emotions in the stands are indescribable, tears of happiness were replaced by tears of sadness.

The 30-minute bonus was very interesting and full of chances, but the two goals by the Spaniards sent the Balkans to their knees for good. Still, the match was absolutely fabulous, with an own goal, seven more nice goals and most of all, a lot of emotions.

Just twenty minutes after the end in Copenhagen, the match between the Swiss and the French was played in Bucharest. Deschamps’ side was expected to win by two or three goals, but the Swiss were active from the start and took the lead in the 15th minute.

It was exactly the same as the first match. The French turned the tide with three goals in the second half, with Karim Benzema’s two goals preceded by an unconverted Swiss penalty kick at 1:0.

Almost nobody believed in the Red and Whites at the end, the tired fans who got up for work the next day went to bed thinking it was decided, but goals in the 81st and 90th minutes meant another extra time.

And the Swiss equalised twice, as their first goal at 3:3 was disallowed for offside. The reaction to the Swiss fan’s valid and invalid goal went around the world.

The extra time didn’t have the same momentum, with Yann Sommer grabbing Olivier Giroud’s best chance. After the fourth double whistle of the game, it was on to penalties, which were still preceded by an emotional speech from Granit Xhaka.

Penalty kicks were the mark of the scorers, no one failed until the fifth, then Kylian Mbappé took the ball and his shot was saved by Sommer. The haired goalkeeper became a hero and for the first time in history ensured Switzerland’s victory in the knockout stage of a major tournament.
