Why did Hazard turn down Saudi Arabia? I told myself I had enough money, explains the Belgian

Even Eden Hazard didn’t escape the lure of Saudi Arabia. The Belgian ended up at Real Madrid in the summer, but unlike his star colleagues, he did not succumb to the million-dollar contract. Why did he choose to do so?

When Eden Hazard transferred from Chelsea to Real Madrid in the summer of 2019, he had the status of a superstar and the Premier League’s best player. Los Blancos shelled out €115 million for him and had to push hard on his salary as well.

Hazard became the highest paid player not only at Real Madrid, but in the whole of La Liga. But he didn’t give much back to the club as he was more on the sickbed than on the pitch for 4 years.

He still had one more year of his contract to go and could have continued to receive a king’s salary. However, he agreed to an early termination of his contract with Real and left Madrid in the summer.

With a return to the elite no longer in sight, Hazard’s next stop could have been the USA or Saudi Arabia, which has attracted a host of stars led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema.

But Hazard did not take up the million-dollar offer and quit in October. On former footballer Rio Ferdinand’s Vibe with Five, he explained that the reason he didn’t go to the Middle East was because he had enough money.

“I got two or three offers to go to Arabia. But I should go there, get a million euros a week and then what?” Hazard explained that this engagement did not make sense to him.

“I have a lot of money. You know how I live my life, I don’t spend or squander a lot of money. So now I have enough money to live happily with my family and raise my children,” Hazard explained to Ferdinand with John Obi Mikel.
