On 27 February, we can look forward to the FIFA The Best awards ceremony, where the best footballer of the past year will be announced. FIFA has already announced the elite three, from which the winner will emerge in less than three weeks.
Every year since 2016, we can look forward to FIFA The Best, with the main draw being the announcement of the best footballer in the world.
Cristiano Ronaldo won the first two editions, then Luka Modric and Lionel Messi lifted the trophy above their heads and the last two editions have been dominated by Polish forward Robert Lewandowski.
He won’t complete the hat trick! In fact, he is not in the current nomination, Lionel Messi has been joined in the top three by newcomers Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema.
Messi put in a number of outstanding performances and led Argentina to success at the 2022 World Cup. The genius number 10 was Argentina’s talisman in Qatar, scoring seven goals and assisting three times during the tournament.
Mbappé netted eight goals at the World Cup, won the Golden Boot of the tournament and became the first player in 56 years to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final. Mbappé’s performance against Argentina will go down in history.
Despite a sensational equaliser, France eventually fell, but Mbappé deserves huge credit for lighting a fire under perhaps the greatest final in the competition’s history.
Benzema in particular shone in the first half of the year and had the vote been taken a few months earlier, few would have doubted his win. He led his Real Madrid side to a Champions League win, winning the award for best player of the tournament as well as being top scorer. He also won LaLiga with Real and scored the most goals in that competition too.
The award ceremony is scheduled for 27 February and the biggest favourite will be Messi, who has finally achieved his footballing dream and once again proved that he is the best footballer in history.
