Union Berlin are in sixth place in the Bundesliga. In the European Conference League, they still have a chance to qualify for the spring knockout stages. They will play Slavia Prague for the promotion place.
Last year, Union finished seventh in the Bundesliga, but two years ago they were still playing in Germany’s second highest league. Seventh place meant qualification for the European Cups. This year, the team is one position better and only two points behind fourth place, which means qualification for the Champions League.
Union Berlin is led by Swiss coach Urs Fischer. He mostly plays with a 3-5-2 formation. He has managed to assemble a good team in Berlin, let’s take a look at his mainstays.
Taiwo Awoniyi
This player joined Liverpool in 2015, but he hasn’t played a single game for them. So far, he has only wandered around on loan, most impressed at Union. Last year he was a guest here and this season he settled permanently in Berlin. With Max Kruse he formed a great attacking duo. After Lewandowski, Schick and Haaland, he is the top scorer in the Bundesliga, scoring 9 goals.
Max Kruse
Max Kruse is a well-known veteran. He has been through several clubs in the German league, only settling in Berlin last year. He has a great kicking technique and scores goals with his head and both feet. Apart from attacking well, he also helps the team in the middle of the pitch. He likes to pick up and distribute the ball all over the place. He is a versatile striker that Slavia must keep an eye on.
Christopher Trimmel
This right-back is the captain of Union Berlin. He is already 34 years old and has been with Berlin since 2014. He joined the team when they were still playing in the second league. Even though he is an older central defender, he is not afraid to go forward. He can send dangerous centres into the box. Moreover, he is a tall player at 189 centimetres. He has seen one red card in the Conference League this season.
Rani Khedira
Compared to the previous three players, he is not such a great player. Rather, he is an interesting name. Rani Khedira is the younger brother of Sami Khedira. The younger of the Khedirs has to live in the shadow of his older sibling. His older brother has won the World Cup or the Champions League. Rani also plays in the centre of midfield, but he hasn’t had any major success yet.
