Who will be the new Manchester United manager according to the bookmakers?
Two years, eleven months and three days. That’s exactly how long Norwegian coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent on the Manchester United bench. After Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho, he is the fourth coach who has failed to follow up the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson’s magnificent 26-year stint.
Who is the current favourite to become Red Devils coach according to the bookmakers?
After a series of disappointing performances and results, Saturday’s 1:4 defeat at newcomer Watford was the final straw in the imaginary cup of patience of Manchester United’s management.
Solskjaer took over Manchester United before Christmas 2018, the day after Jose Mourinho’s contract was terminated, initially as a stopgap until the end of the season. Back in March 2019, after a string of wins, he signed a longer-term three-year deal and was announced as head coach.
Nora’s achievements include a second place finish in the league and the Europa League final last season. Although Solskjaer cannot be denied his long-term work on the United bench, the team was far behind expectations after the summer transfers and after only one win in the last seven league games, the news of the coach’s dismissal is not a surprise.
British bookmakers such as Betfair, WilliamHill and SkyBet have already listed their odds on the Red Devils’ potential permanent coach. The situation is developing very quickly. While as recently as Sunday, Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers or Zinedine Zidane seemed to be the biggest favourites, a couple of media outlets could shake up the bookmakers’ odds very quickly.
It was Zidane who was reported to have said in an interview that he was not interested in the Old Trafford job. On the other hand, speculation about Pochettino from Paris Saint Germain is growing. According to the Betfair bookmaker, the 49-year-old Argentine is currently the biggest favourite to become Manchester United coach with odds of 2.63.
Pochettino is also favoured by WilliamHill with even lower odds of 2.5 or SkyBet with odds of 2.25.
In second place, the bookmakers have the aforementioned Brendan Rodgers, the Leicester City coach. At SkyBet Rodgers has odds of 6, at WilliamHill 5.5 and at Betfair 5. Another possible candidate for the permanent coach is the incumbent, another club legend, Michael Carrick. Carrick is once again the most favoured by SkyBet, who, like Rodgers, offers odds of 6, while Betfair offers odds of 6.5 and WilliamHill 7.
There is the highest consensus among British bookmakers on these three candidates, the other coaches seem less likely from today’s perspective, but they are well-known names that have been speculated about several times.
The others in terms of odds are, of course, Zinedine Zidane and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag. The odds on Zidane went up after his interview, but he remains on the shortlist for punters. Zidane is most favoured by WilliamHill at odds of 9, with SkyBet at odds of 10 and Betfair has the legendary Frenchman at odds of 11.
Dutch coach Ten Hag, on the other hand, has odds of 8 at Betfair, 10 at WilliamHill and Skybet offers odds of 11.
The odds are valid as of Monday, November 22, 2021.
