Wimbledon was drawn on Friday and all players know their opponents for the opening round and the possible line-ups for the following rounds. Who will be the first test for Alcaraz, Djokovic and the other favourites for the London Grand Slam? What interesting duels may occur during the next days of the prestigious tournament?

Carlos Alcaraz

The Spanish tennis player is once again the world number one and the main competitor of Novak Djokovic in the battle for the triumph at this year’s Wimbledon. The start of the tournament will have a French flavour for him. He will face the experienced Jeremy Chardy.

The 36-year-old Frenchman has played only five matches this year and has only won once. For Alcaraz, who proved his tennis qualities with a triumph on grass at Queen’s Club, he should not pose a significant problem.

In the second round Alcaraz will meet the winner of the purely French match between Muller and Rinderknecht. Against the latter, the Spaniard started his winning journey at the Queen’s Club after a tough battle.

In Alcaraz’s quarter of the pavilion we can also find the German Zverev, the Dane Rune and the American Tiafoe. Barring any big surprises, these players will be his opponents in the next stages of the All England Club.

Novak Djokovic

The Serbian tennis player, who is ranked number two at Wimbledon this year, is expected to attack another title. It would be the eighth for Djokovic at Wimbledon. Moreover, this season is shaping up to see an assault on winning the calendar grand slam by the thirty-six-year-old.

The Serbian will face Pedro Cachino on the grass courts of the All England Club in the opening match. The 28-year-old Argentine has only been appearing more regularly at top-level tournaments in the last year. Off the clay courts, however, he has only managed to record one win this year.

A possible opponent for the next round is Australian Thompson, who has played a large number of matches on grass this year and won most of them. He reached the final in Hertogenbosch. The fresh champion from Halle, Kazakhstan’s Bublik, may meet Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

Daniil Medvedev

The number three seed in this year’s Wimbledon tournament went the furthest here in the fourth round. The Russian is having a rather turbulent season and his draw suggests two important things.

Twenty-year-old home player Arthur Fery should not threaten him in a first-round match, but a potential opponent for the second round, Frenchman Mannarino, is a bigger threat. It was he who knocked out Medvedev in the opening match in Hertogenbosch two weeks ago.

Ruud and Tsitsipas

The draw has treated the players seeded as number four and five quite the opposite. If the Norwegian tennis player does not fail, he will encounter more prominent names only in the later stages of the tournament; Tsitsipas, on the other hand, can only expect interesting opponents in case of his success.

The Greek will start against Dominic Thiem, the winner of the 2020 US Open. In the second round, his duel with Andy Murray is realistic, and in the third round he may face the 20-year-old American Ben Shelton, quarterfinalist of this year’s Australian Open.

The opening matches at the All England Club are scheduled for Monday, July 3.
