Wimbledon is approaching at an unstoppable speed. There may not be any points on the line, but victory in the most prestigious tournament on grass is still on the line. The organisers have now declassified the names that will be given a wild card to take part in this tennis feast.
Seven men and six women have received wild cards for the main stage of this year’s Wimbledon, which begins on Monday, June 27. Traditionally, most of the places have been taken by representatives of British tennis. But there are some surprising names among the chosen ones.
The men’s section
For the men’s competition, the organisers nominated five local tennis players consisting of Liam Broady, Jay Clarke, Alastair Gray, Paul Jubb and Ryan Peniston. All of them are representatives of the second hundred of the world ranking.
However, in addition to them, Wimbledon debutant and recent discovery Tim Van Rijthoven of the Netherlands (106th) was also given a chance. He won the title in Hertogenbosch last week very unexpectedly and impressed the tournament organizers with his performance.
The biggest star among those who received a wild card is undoubtedly the Swiss Stan Wawrinka. Although he is currently only 290th on the ATP rankings, he still has his qualities and this is probably the last chance for him to complete his collection of Grand Slam victories.
He won the title at the Australian Open in 2014, Roland Garros a year later and the US Open the year after that. But “Stan the Man”, as the legendary Swiss is nicknamed, has not had a very good season since his comeback. Last time at the Queens Club he lost to American Paul in two sets 1::6 and 4::6.
Women’s section
Five local players (Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Sonay Kartal, Yuriko Miyazaki and Katie Swan) were nominated for the women’s section. The last spot was left for the return of a tennis legend to the courts.
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, who last played just on the grass last year at the All England Club. The American confirmed her participation on social media and the currently 1208th player in the world rankings will be playing in Eastbourne in the doubles.
There is still one place in the men’s line-up and two in the women’s line-up. Let’s see what other names the organizers have in store for us.
