Who can the Czechs get in the eighth round? The match with England will decide, France is a threat, Sweden could be too
The Czechs are in the Euro quarterfinals after 9 years. A great achievement, even more so when the national team was written off by many people after the explosion with Italy. Before the last game against England, the Czechs are already certain to qualify, all that’s left is to find out the opponent. And there could be several of them.
The Czechs are in the Euro quarterfinals after 9 years. A great achievement, even more so when the national team was written off by many people after the explosion with Italy. Before the last game against England, the Czechs are already sure to advance, all that’s left is to find out the opponent. And there could be several of them.
From two matches Jaroslav Šilhavy’s charges got valuable 4 points, thanks to a win over Scotland and a draw with Croatia. And thanks to Monday’s results, the Czechs are assured of advancing to the eight-finals. All that’s left to decide is which place they will advance from.
The math is clear. If the Czechs beat or draw with England, they will advance from first place. An amazing achievement, but one that has a slight aftertaste. For in this case, the Czechs would be up against one of the big three – France, Portugal, Germany, or in the event of a miracle, Hungary. But if you want to succeed, you have to beat everyone.
If Soucek and co. lose by two goals and at the same time Croatia wins by a maximum of one goal, the Czechs advance from second place. The lot is much more favourable there, as we would be up against the runner-up from Group E. That could be anyone of the four of Sweden, Slovakia, Spain, Poland.
Our score is 3::1, the Croats have a score of 1::2. If we lose by three or more goals and the Croatians somehow win, we would go from third place.
It’s even wilder there, because there could be several opponents. Netherlands, Belgium, France, Portugal, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Poland, Slovakia. It would depend on who wins their groups and where we would be in the third team table.
Whatever the outcome, the Czechs shouldn’t have this calculation in their heads going into the game against England. If they really want to succeed, they need to take on everyone. And in the final, if they beat England, why can’t they beat Portugal or Germany?
