Over the past week, the group stage of the Davis Cup final took place in four European cities. How does the Davis Cup group stage look like?

Group A

Canada, the defending champions, was the king of Group A in Bologna. Although the maple leaf country’s biggest tennis stars Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov did not enter the game, none of the trio of Italy, Chile, Sweden was up to the task. Gabriel Diallo, Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil were the ones who made it happen.

The second place went to the home team Italians, whose team leader was the current world number 18 Lorenzo Musetti in the absence of Jannik Sinner. However, his teammates, namely Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Arnaldi, achieved singles wins. The Chileans and the Swedes remained outside the qualification ranks.

Group B

In Group B, Great Britain were successful at home. They also beat last year’s finalists Australia in Manchester. The final first place went to Cameron Norrie, Daniel Evans, Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Neil Skupski.

The Australians beat both the French and the Swiss after defeating the Brits. Alex de Minaur and Thanassi Kokkinakis in the singles and Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the doubles won for England.

Group C

The most successful team of the final groups of the famous competition was the Czech one. Thanks to Jiří Leheček, Tomáš Macháč, Jakub Menšík and Adam Pavlásek, the team of non-playing captain Jaroslav Navrátil enjoyed victory in all nine matches and advanced for the first time to the knockout stage of the new and much-criticised Davis Cup format.

The second position was occupied by the Serbians, who were helped by the recent US Open champion and the new ATP leader Novak Djokovic. On the other hand, the home team of Spain, led by David Ferrer, former world number three, had to do without Carlos Alcaraz or Rafael Nadal. Together with the South Koreans, they did not advance.

Group D

Group D in Split, Croatia, offered the most evenly matched competition. In the end, the two-point teams of Finland and the Netherlands celebrated. Singles players Emil Ruusuvuori and Otto Virtanen were the driving forces for the Nordic team, while for the Dutch this was true among others for the 24th singles ranked player Tallon Griekspoor.

Croatia with Borna Ćorić and the US team, historically the best daviscup country, with Frances Tiafoe or Tommy Paul failed. The South Europeans did better in their clash.
