During the coronavirus pandemic, fans had to watch football at home in front of their screens. Banners replaced fans in stadiums and background noise was added to TV broadcasts to give viewers a more authentic experience.
Fans have a huge influence on football, when the stadium is full of supporters the atmosphere is second to none, it gives the home team an extra boost during the game. And conversely, it can make the opposition fearful.
A study conducted by PopFoot lists the 40 clubs with the highest average attendance in the 21st century.
The Premier League has 10 representatives in the ranking, including Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal.
Manchester United ranked highest of all English clubs with an average attendance of 69,488 recorded at Old Trafford.
Germany’s Borussia Dortmund came first with an average attendance of 76,155. They are famous for their Yellow Wall, which provides a great spectacle before every home game.
An average attendance of over 76,000 spectators when the full capacity of the stadium is 81,365 spectators, just shows how much support Dortmund has, whose fans are willing to come out to support their team week after week.
BVB hold the top spot in the Bundesliga in average attendance almost every season. Only last season Stuttgart won.
French giant PSG is only in the third ten in the company of clubs from the second Bundesliga or Rotterdam in the Netherlands. This is mainly due to the smaller stadium, which can hold less than 50,000 fans.
