There will be a lot of interest in Antonio Rüdiger this summer. The Chelsea stopper has been performing well, is at the ideal age (29) and will be free thanks to his expiring contract. Where will he end up?
Rüdiger doesn’t take a big salary at Chelsea, nor was he in the starting lineup for a long time, that only changed last January with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. His importance to the team has increased rapidly since then, but his salary has not.
And the German stopper doesn’t like that, which is why he doesn’t want to sign a new contract with Chelsea. But he doesn’t have to regret not continuing in London, because he has more than enough offers.
Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich and Juventus have been circling around Rüdiger since the winter. Real Madrid was supposed to be the biggest favourite, everything seemed to be agreed. However, the Spanish giant eventually backed out as they didn’t want to agree to Rüdiger’s games with his agent, who was increasing his wage demands by the minute.
The signing of Rüdiger was thus already almost out of the question at Valdebebas, but now he is back on the scene. And it is also, as Marca reports, due to the wishes of Carlo Ancelotti, who has asked the management to strengthen the defensive line for next year.
Given that Real want to concentrate a lot of money on attacking reinforcements, a player for the defence for free would come in very handy. And a quality one at that.
At the moment Ancelotti can rely on the trio of Alaba, Militao, Nacho, which is very reliable, but in case of absence there is a problem, as the latter also alternates on the left flank. Reinforcement in defence is thus a necessity.
Ferland Mendy is often struggling with injuries, Marcelo is playing his last season at Real Madrid. Dani Carvajal is also often out injured, so Nacho could be a reliable alternative for all positions in defence and Rüdiger would join the tracking rotation.
Rüdiger has played 47 games this season and is an absolutely key player for Tuchel. In 4380 minutes played he scored 5 goals and added 4 assists. Among other things, he scored in the Champions League quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabéu.
