Lionel Messi has been absent for an unusually long time due to injury. He brought it on during the Copa América tournament, where he helped Argentina defend their title. He has not been seen on the pitch for a month and a half. The Inter Miami coach has outlined when we should expect his return.

  • Inter Miami are still without their star player
  • Messi is still nursing an ankle injury
  • Coach hints at when he will return to the pitch

Lionel Messi is already starting to be noticeably missed by football fans. He last entered a match on July 15, when he played Argentina in the Copa América final. He was plagued by health problems at the championship, but helped his team defend the title and win their third major trophy in a row.

But the 37-year-old legend did not finish the final. In the 66th minute, the Argentine phenom had to leave the pitch and the world was then treated to images of his injured and horribly swollen ankle. Since then, he has been awaiting his return.

Although Inter Miami is missing, the team is thriving. They fell out of the Leagues Cup in the eighth round, but they’re on a roll in MLS. It’s the best not only in its Eastern Conference, but in MLS in general. He’s scored 53 points in 25 games.

However, it should be mentioned that despite his long absence, Messi is one of the most productive players in the American competition. Moreover, he is the most productive player of his team, having scored 12 goals in 12 league matches, in which he also collected 9 assists.

When will Messi return to the pitch?

Recently, there have been concerns about how much longer the eight Ballon d’Or winner will be missed by his team. Also due to the fact that he is missing from the squad for the World Cup qualifiers in September.

Inter coach Tata Martino was therefore faced with questions about how his captain is now. However, the Argentine coach has come up with relatively good news. At least, more positive than perhaps expected.

“We don’t have an estimated time for his return, but most likely he will still play in the MLS regular season. It will all depend on how he feels and how he performs in training,” Goal quotes him as saying.

Inter Miami could make a run at the playoffs this year, where they didn’t make the playoffs last season. The last games of the regular season will be played on October 19. It is therefore possible that one of the best footballers in history will not play for another month and a half. Hopefully, he’ll be back and on the field sooner.
