When I die, there will definitely be a minute’s silence in Hungary’s stadiums, says Hungary coach Marco Rossi after win over England
Hungary inflicted their worst home defeat since 1928 on England on Tuesday, the second win for the Hungarians in two weeks after Italian coach Marco Rossi’s side also managed to win the opening round of the Nations League at the Puskás Arena.
Hungary inflicted their worst home defeat since 1928 on England on Tuesday, the second win for the Hungarians in two weeks after Italian coach Marco Rossi’s side also managed to win the opening round of the Nations League at the Puskás Arena.
The 77-year-old coach has been playing very good football with Hungary so far. Already at the Euros last year he managed to draw with his team in the group stage against the current world champions France and also against Germany.
Failed qualification for the World Cup
The qualifying cycle for the World Cup in Qatar ended in disappointment for the Hungarians, thanks to the losses in the double-header against Albania, they will not be looking at this year’s feast of football. Already in this qualification the team around Dominik Szoboszlai faced England twice, with a 0:4 loss at home and a hopeful 1:1 draw away.
And it is since that draw last October that Hungary has bounced back to great performances. In the Nations League group, Rossi’s selection had matches against Germany, Italy and just England, and the experienced Italian strategist showed what a good job he is doing with the Hungarian team.
Success in the Nations League
Firstly, a 1:0 win at home in the Puskás Arena against the English team in the first round, followed by a very close 1:2 loss to the lacklustre Italians. Then came the second draw in a row with the Germans and now came the highlight, a 4:0 win over England.
“England are among the big favourites for the World Cup, today’s result is like a miracle,” said coach Rossi after the game, “I am happy for all the players, staff, fans and the country.”
Before taking up his post, Rossi told the Hungarian elite that he would like to leave a legacy behind during his time with the team. “This win is exactly that legacy, when I die I am sure there will be a minute’s silence in the stadiums of Hungary. It is a great achievement for me.”
At the same time he also revealed his future plans, there won’t be much time for big celebrations. Tonight, the famous American band Red Hot Chilli Peppers will give a concert at the Puskás Arena, and a day later Rossi returns to his home country to be with his family.
Hungary is leading its Nations League group with only two more matches against Italy and Germany to go. It is already clear that the paper underdog of this group is a force to be reckoned with.
