The Manchester derby went as expected, yet several club legends took on the United players. In the 16th episode of our weekly column, which breaks down the interesting facts from the world of English football, we will also look at Wolverhampton and Brentford.
Manchester United without a captain
A fairly even first half, then misery. The last third of the Manchester derby was basically just a play-off, as the Citizens had the upper hand. It must be admitted that the first goal fell after a borderline tackle in the Red Devils’ penalty area, but Erik ten Hag couldn’t shake his players in the locker room from the crisis moment.
As is especially the tradition at Manchester United, club legends immediately rushed to criticism. Roy Keane took a swipe at Bruno Fernandes, in his opinion he is not the right captain. He blamed the Portuguese for little and moreover bad emotions a few months back. On the other hand, who has the character to be captain?
It can’t be Harry Maguire because he doesn’t have the long term support of the fans. The classic heartthrob is Scott McTominay, but he has given erratic performances and has no solid place in the lineup. Perhaps the most ideal adept sits on the bench, surprisingly it is Raphael Varane.
Wolves’ broken season
Wolverhampton confirmed their good form at home against a strong Newcastle side, mainly thanks to the synergy of the Hwang Hee-chan, Pedro Neto pairing. The latter made his return to the Premier League in style after a long injury, being the best assistant. However, he is now facing a break.
Sprinting late in the game, suddenly dropping the ball to an opponent and falling. Shots at Wolves supporters looked like they’d lost their season in a flash. And maybe they did. A hamstring injury is a matter of weeks, and Wolves supporters have vivid memories of what an ordeal it was last year without Neto.
Brentford’s new Toney
Brentford won for the third time since promotion to the Premier League at Chelsea, again with a big contribution from Bryan Mbeum. The Cameroonian winger scored a goal to make it 2-0, but primarily he did a heap of the black work that makes him so popular with Bees fans.
And although it was a big question before the season, Ivan Toney, who is running out a penalty for betting, is slowly being forgotten. Mbeumo is teamier, more fluent and his record of 6+2 for ten goals is more than good. From tenth place, his club is only four points behind the cup top 7.
