Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo, both among the most reliable penalty takers in the football world. But what now that they both play for the same team? Apparently, it will turn out as everyone expected.

Both Portuguese players already play together for the national team, where of course there is no debate about penalties and direct kicks. The captain Cristiano Ronaldo is in charge of everything, Bruno rather seconds him in his absence.

But at Manchester United, it is Bruno Fernandes who is the chief enforcer. The 27-year-old midfielder has perhaps been key to the Red Devils’ rise, scoring 8 goals and adding 7 assists in 14 games in the first half of the 2019/20 campaign.

He exploded in points last season, netting 18 goals and adding 12 assists in 37 league games. This season he has 4 goals in 4 starts. So far, none from penalty kicks, a discipline he excelled at last season.

But with the arrival of one of the best players in history, the hierarchy is changing. Never mind that Ronaldo is a rookie and Fernandes converted 21 penalties out of a possible 22 in Manchester.

“Yes, it’s nice to take penalties and direct kicks. But Ole is the manager, Maguire is the captain and Cristiano is the most experienced when it comes to penalties and direct kicks. So in the final it depends on them. I’m sure they’ll figure it out,” Bruno Fernandes was quoted as saying.

Cristiano Ronaldo has converted 139 penalties in his career, including the most difficult ones, like the decisive one in the Champions League final or the decisive penalty in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final against England when Ronaldo was just 20 years old.

In his entire career, he has only missed 28, an amazing record. So there seems to be no doubt about who will be taking penalty kicks in the red jersey.
