Two league rounds in quick succession and the next instalment of our weekly Premier League column is here. This time we take a look under the hood of Arsenal’s 3-1 thrashing of Liverpool, while highlighting Wolves seasonal progress.
The main showpiece of the round between Arsenal and Liverpool offered a very good performance from the Gunners midfield, alongside one error leading to a goal on either side. Arsenal’s dominance is also portrayed by the xG of 3.52. Liverpool have never faced a bigger number since the statistic has been calculated.
Trent will have to work hard
Due to the death of his father, Liverpool were missing the fired up youngster Conor Bradley. Trent Alexander Arnold returned to the right side of defence and was on fire defensively. You could say as traditional when facing Gabriel Martinelli. The Englishman always has a problem with that.
That Arnold has gaps in his defensive game is well known. But against Arsenal it looked like he let some of the duels slip before they started. Fans complained last year that he had no competition and therefore no motivation to work hard, only now he does. Bradley has jumped straight into adult football.
With the midfield burnt out at the Emirates Stadium, a move for Arnold in midfield is also on the cards. This has been speculated for the third year now, only Jürgen Klopp hasn’t had a quality enough understudy at right-back yet. Now there is nothing stopping him.
Wolves jump to Europe?
Before the season, one of the biggest outsiders in the competition is in the top half of the table. And rightly so! Wolves are treading water under manager Gary O’Neill, they beat Chelsea for the second time in a row at the weekend and the fans are starting to talk about cups.
And after all, why not? All three players in the offensive trident are in the form of their lives, while Hwang Hee-chan has been at the African Championships for the last few rounds. And he’s been very well replaced by another offensive player – Pablo Sarabia.
Wolves’ only problem seems to be defensively. Craig Dawson and Max Kilman are working well, just what if one of them gets injured. Then Wolves are in big trouble and the cup fight becomes a hope for a quiet mid-table finish.
