What the Premier League is all about: Luton have got it! The current Arsenal, on the other hand, is not
Christmas, in British football the holiday of tiredness and English weeks, has come and gone. The Premier League is on break for just under two weeks, but we won’t be missing our regular column on what’s happening in the best league in the world. This time, we’ll focus on Arsenal and Luton.
Christmas, in British football the holiday of tiredness and English weeks, has come and gone. The Premier League is on break for just under two weeks, but we won’t be missing our regular column on what’s happening in the best league in the world. This time, we’ll focus on Arsenal and Luton.
Arsenal without reinforcements have no chance of winning the title
First place and good spirits over Christmas Eve, two rounds later fourth place and huge criticism. After a good season, Arsenal have once again exposed the weaknesses that have been highlighted for three transfer seasons. The biggest talking point of course is that he doesn’t have a finished striker.
There are many more weaknesses. There is a lack of experience on the wings, someone like Raheem Sterling at Chelsea. Youngsters can’t play round after round, no matter how great their talent. Mikel Arteta has no one to rotate him, and he hasn’t been injured yet. That would be trouble.
The left side of the defence needs to be addressed. Jurrien Timber is still injured and Oleksandr Zinchenko is on fire in big games.
Meanwhile, fan favourite, heartthrob and hard worker Kieran Tierney is running around on loan at Real Sociedad. In that case, though, coach Arteta would have to reach into the system because Tierney probably can’t play the inverted defender.
Gary Neville aptly described the Gunners’ squad in the week. Compared to Liverpool, who have Alisson, Trent Alexander Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, Arsenal have not found a “world-class” player. Only a lot of excellent footballers who have no experience of proper success.
Luton’s the best of the newcomers
Nobody believed in them, maybe not even their own fans, but Luton are getting better and better every month. They have famously hit the minimum amount of money into suitable reinforcements – Thomas Kaminski is one of the league’s best goalkeepers, Andros Townsend has added experience and Ross Barkley, that’s a chapter in itself.
The former Everton and Chelsea midfield player has come alive in the middle of the field, sending excellent passes up the wings, confident, shooting from distance. And he clearly appreciates the chance the tiny club has given him. His creativity has benefited the tidy striker Elijah Adebayo, who is already on five league goals.
Luton may have fallen to Chelsea 2-3, but they proved they can trouble anyone at home. Moreover, it won the previous two games, is currently only a point behind the relegation places and has a game against Bournemouth to play. In addition, unlike the other newcomers, he has made his home ground a hard-to-conquer fortress.
