Seven Ballons d’Or, hundreds of goals scored, dozens of trophies. Lionel Messi is definitely one of the best footballers in history. His name is more or less a brand. He has millions of fans around the world. But it also takes a toll.
The Argentine is perceived as more of an introvert who doesn’t exactly seek attention. However, in his career, he still has to face moments when fans run onto the pitch just to give him a hug or take a picture with him.
In a recent interview with an Argentinian publication , Olé admitted that he is often not comfortable with that. He also explained his reasons, while also expressing some admiration for fans who do so.
“It’s happened a lot lately. In some matches I then got downright scared. For example, in Argentina’s last game in Miami. Thesecurity even hit me,” Messi let himself be heard.
“In general, these are nice signs of affection from the fans. It’s crazy that they do it even though they know what can happen later and what the consequences can be. But apart from that, you don’t know what the hell to do. How’s security gonna behave? Sometimes they come aggressive, sometimes they don’t. Most of the time it’s uncomfortable moments,” he added.
The fact is that the Argentine has had to survive several similar situations this year. Both in the national team and at club level. For the sake of the fans, let’s hope no one decides to do anything like that at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
Argentina, led by Messi, will be one of the biggest favourites to win the whole tournament. For Messi, this will most likely be his very last World Cup. At 35, he would like to finally win the most valuable national trophy.
