What is the Super Ballon d’Or? In 6 years, names like Maldini, Ronaldinho and Nedved will come to life
The Super Ballon d’Or is a really important prize, which has only been awarded to a single footballer so far. We will see the second name in 6 years, as this prize is awarded once every 30 years. What exactly does this trophy mean?
The Super Ballon d’Or is a really important prize, which has only been awarded to a single footballer so far. We will see the second name in 6 years, as this prize is awarded once every 30 years. What exactly does this trophy mean?
The Super Ballon d’Or was first voted for by France Football in 1989, when Alfredo Di Stéfano won this award. The Real Madrid legend was chosen as the best footballer of the past 30 years, having been given preference over players such as Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer.
Until 1995, however, only European players could win the Ballon d’Or, so Diego Maradona could not be considered, who quite possibly would have dominated the Super Ballon d’Or at the expense of Di Stéfano.
The Argentine-Spanish footballer, who left this world in 2014, scored 308 goals in 396 official matches during his career and won 18 major trophies and 2 Ballon d’Or.
The next election of the best player of the previous 30 years will be held in 2029, when legends such as:
Ronaldo Nazario, Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Baggio, Lothar Matthäus, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Thierry Henry, Andres Iniesta, Pavel Nedved, Marco van Basten, Jean-Pierre Papin, George Weah, Fabio Cannavaro, Xavi, Dennis Bergkamp, Paolo Maldini, Jurgen Klinsmann, Gianluigi Buffon, Eric Cantona, Alessandro Del Piero and others.
The big favourites, however, will undoubtedly be Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with few betting on the Portuguese striker. Messi has won the Ballon d’Or seven times and this year could be his eighth. No one else even comes close to the Argentine magician, so it would be a wonder if he doesn’t win the Super Ballon d’Or in six years.
However, some of the current players who are just gaining momentum may step in. One of them is Erling Haaland, who for the first time in his career will be in real contention for the position of the best player in the world this year.
If his shooting form holds up for the full 6 years, he would certainly be a great competitor to the aforementioned legends. For now, however, it’s still not enough for Messi at least.
