The last round of the Champions League group stage is upon us. While in some groups the qualifiers are already clear and some teams have already secured the first place, other groups are still very much alive. Who needs what to advance?
The last round of the Champions League group stage is upon us. While in some groups the qualifiers are already clear and some teams have already secured the first place, other groups are still very much alive. Who needs what to advance?
Group A
1.11 – Liverpool vs. Napoli, Rangers vs. Ajax
The group is already decided. Napoli will secure promotion from first place if they don’t lose to Liverpool by more than 4 goals. Ajax will secure the Europa League if they don’t lose to Rangers by more than 5 goals.
Group B
1.11 – Porto vs. Atlético, Leverkusen vs. Brugge
Both Brugge and Porto are certain to qualify for the semi-finals. The Belgian side will finish first if they get the same or more points than Porto. In the battle for third place and the Europa League, Atlético Madrid and Leverkusen will go the distance, with the Colchoneros needing to get the same or more points than Schick and co. If Atlético lose and Leverkusen draw, Bayer will be third.
Group C
1.11 – Pilsen vs. Barcelona, Bayern vs. Inter
The only group with Czech participation is already completely decided and the last round will not change anything. Bayern are certain to finish first, Inter are certain to qualify, Barcelona go into the Europa League and Plzen finish last.
Group D
1.11 – Sporting vs. Frankfurt, Marseille vs. Tottenham
The most evenly matched and muddled group from which all teams can still advance. Tottenham are in the best position, needing only a draw to secure promotion. Spurs will finish first if they win or both games end in a draw.
Sporting will be promoted if they don’t lose. If they win and Tottenham don’t, they finish first. Frankfurt will go through if they beat Sporting. If they win and Tottenham don’t, they finish first.
Marseille will advance if they win. In addition, if Sporting and Frankfurt end in a draw, Marseille would move up from first place.
Group E
2.11 – Chelsea vs. Dinamo Zagreb, AC Milan vs. Salzburg
Chelsea are certain to advance from first place. AC Milan will secure promotion if they don’t lose. Salzburg will advance if they beat AC Milan. However, if they lose and Dinamo beat Chelsea, they will finish fourth. Dinamo Zagreb are only fighting for the Europa League, they have to beat Chelsea and hope Salzburg lose.
Group F
2.11 – Real Madrid vs. Celtic, Shakhtar vs. Leipzig
Real Madrid are certain to qualify. They will secure first place if they get the same or more points than Leipzig. The German side will advance if they don’t lose to Shakhtar. If they win and Real Madrid don’t, they will advance from first place.
Shakhtar will secure promotion from second place if they beat Leipzig. Celtic are already clearly fourth.
Group G
2.11 – Manchester City vs. Sevilla, Copenhagen vs. Dortmund
The second group where everything is already clear. Manchester City go through as winners, Dortmund finish second, Sevilla head into the Europa League and Copenhagen finish last.
Group H
2.11 – Juventus vs. PSG, Maccabi vs. Benfica
PSG and Benfica are assured of progression and will be fighting for top spot from a distance. The Parisians have the better score by 4 goals. Thus, if both teams get the same points, PSG will be first.
Juventus and Maccabi will fight for the Europa League again from a distance. Juventus have a better score (-3) than Maccabi (-9). So if both teams get the same points, Juventus will be third.
