Wimbledon 2022 has just kicked off and we can look forward to seeing the best tennis players in the world clash at arguably the most popular Grand Slam. A lot of attention will be on Rafael Nadal, who is looking for a hat-trick, which he has only managed once in his career.

The tennis king who currently towers above all the greats. With 22 Grand Slams to his name, he looks up to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, who have 20.

It’s his least favourite Grand Slam. In London, he’s collected 53 wins, the fewest of any Grand Slam. Along with the Australian Open, he has the fewest trophies of the Big Four.

It all started very promising. He reached the final in 2006, but lost to Federer in four sets. A year later he reached the final again, but lost again, this time in five sets.

But then came 2008 and the best tennis match in history. Nadal was already leading 2:0 in sets (6-4, 6-4), but Federer tied it up in two tiebreaks at 2:2. In an incredibly exciting battle, Nadal dominated the final fifth set 9-7 and celebrated victory after almost five hours.

In 2009, he did not compete due to a knee injury, but a year later he rose to the top again when he defeated Czech tennis player Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the final. In 2011, he reached the final again, but lost to Novak Djokovic.

The Spanish tennis player made it to five finals out of five appearances and the grass seemed to suit him. But since then he has never fought for the title at the All England Club. The black series came.

The Black Series

In 2012, he lost in the second round to Czech Lukas Rosol, and a year later he fell to Steve Darcis in the first round. In 2014, he lost in the eighth round to Nick Kyrgios and in 2015, he said goodbye in the second round after losing to Dustin Brown.

He did not start in 2016 due to injury, and in 2017 he lost in the eighth round to Guillermo Muller. He then picked himself up, reaching the semifinals in 2018 and 2019, where he lost to Djokovic and Federer. He hasn’t competed at Wimbledon since.

Now he’s back after three years and despite all the health woes, he’s in great form. He has won both Grand Slams so far and is looking for a hat-trick of Grand Slams in a row. He managed to win three consecutive Grand Slam trophies only in 2010 (French Open, Wimbledon, US Open).

Now he has a chance to repeat that feat. And if he succeeds, he could attack all four Grand Slams in a year at the US Open, something he has never done.
