On Thursday, the first round of the Australian Open was drawn and the large Czech team already knows its opponents. The toughest opponent is Kateřina Siniaková, who will challenge the world number seven Anett Kontaveitová, who has beaten the Czech tennis player four times in five mutual matches.
Petra Kvitova will not be so happy about the draw either. Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea beat her in the second round of the Australian Open last year. But it’s a different story for Markéta
Our highest seeded tennis player, Barbora Krejcikova, had an acceptable draw. Currently number four in the WTA rankings, she will play Andrea Petkovic (72nd in the WTA rankings), whom she beat last year at Wimbledon.
Markéta Vondrousova can wash her hands then, but she has to be cautious. Priscilla Honova is only 223rd in the WTA rankings, but she shocked the tennis world by beating the aforementioned Kvitova during the tournament in Adelaide.
Tereza Martincova will play Lauren Davis (95th in the WTA ranking) as the last representative of our women’s tennis team. Jiri Vesely will fight Stefan Kozlov (165th in the ATP ranking) in the men’s part of the pavilion.
Who will the world’s top players face?
For now, the lot is counting on the participation of Novak Djokovic, who should face his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic (78th in the ATP rankings) in the first round. However, Djokovic’s participation is still uncertain. Anyway, it’s a very good draw, which could also mean peace in the audience.
Interestingly enough, Djokovic is in the same half of the pool as Rafael Nadal. The two old rivals, who are looking to claim a record 21st Grand Slam title, could meet in the semi-finals. The Spaniard will open the tournament with Marcos Giron (66th in the rankings).
If everything goes according to plan, we can expect some interesting quarter-final matches. Djokovic could face Matteo Berretini (7th in the rankings), Nadal would face Alexander Zverev (3rd in the rankings), Casper Ruud (8th) would meet Stefanos Tsitsipas (4th) and Andrey Rublev (5th) would face Daniil Medvedev (2nd).
In the women’s section, home player Ash Barty is the big favourite to win, but Naomi Osaka could get in her way in the fourth round. Barty does not know her opponent for the first round yet, Osaka is scheduled to face Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (53rd in the WTA rankings).
