Increasingly, coaches are deploying teenagers who should still be in school instead of experienced players in their thirties. Who are the youngest ones?
What did you do when you were sixteen? No less than seven footballers hit the current season in one of the top 5 leagues at that age. Or another question, do you remember what you were doing in 2005? That’s when these footballers who are currently hopping in the top 5 leagues were born.
1. Paul Wanner, Bayern Munich, 16 years and 15 days
Although Bayern Munich lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach 1: 2 at the weekend, there was something positive about the match. 34-year-old coach Julian Nagelsmann sent only 16-year-old Paul Wanner on the pitch, who became the youngest player in Bayern Munich’s history.
The Munich colossus alumnus jumped into the game just 15 days after his 16th birthday and certainly did not disappoint. He is the youngest player to start in the top 5 leagues this season.
2. Mathys Tel, Stade Rennais, 16 years, 3 months and 19 days
The second youngest footballer to run in the top stadiums in Europe, 16-year-old striker Mathys Tel has already started three games in Ligue 1, made one appearance in the Coupe de France and made two starts in the Conference League.
Stade Rennais can work fantastically with young players. Eduardo Camavinga started playing for the A-team at 16, played two and a half seasons and left for Real Madrid for €25 million. A similar story may await Tela.
3. Sidney Raebiger, RB Leipzig, 16 years, 8 months, 22 days
Leipzig are known for giving their youngsters a lot of space. This season is no exception, although RB hasn’t been doing well.
16-year-old midfielder Sidney Raebiger made his debut in the 4-1 win against Mainz at the weekend. He has also already made one start in the German Cup.
4. Youssoufa Moukoko, Borussia Dortmund, 16 years, 8 months, 25 days
The most recognisable name of the selection. Youssoufa Moukoko became the youngest player in Bundesliga history last season when he started at 16 years and 1 day. At youth level, he flashed hard-to-believe stats of 141 goals and 27 assists in 88 games.
He has already started 24 games for the Borussia A-team, scoring 3 goals, all in the Bundesliga. Dortmund is probably the best club in the world for his development, as they are not afraid to give opportunities to such young players. Unfortunately, injuries have not escaped him lately, which seem to stem from a workload he is not yet ready for. In the future, however, he could be another great BVB gem.
5. Zidan Sertdemir, Bayer Leverkusen, 16 years, 9 months, 3 days
Patrik Schick’s teammate made his debut in the 1-1 draw with Hertha, he was 16 years and 9 months old at the time. Although Sertdemir has a Turkish name and citizenship, he represents Denmark at international level.
He has already made 2 starts for Leverkusen and it seems that more will not be long in coming.
It is also interesting to note that 4 of the 5 youngest players are playing in the Bundesliga. So the German league is probably the best for talent development.
