Indeed, Haas boss Guenther Steiner has confirmed that negotiations for a new contract have not yet begun. Will the German driver get an extension or will he move elsewhere?
Twelve points, fifteenth place in the drivers’ championship – that’s Schumacher’s record at Haas so far.
Schumacher entered Formula 1 as Formula 2 champion last year, but failed to score any points in his first season, mainly due to the very poor performance of his monoposto.
And his entry into the current season has also been less than ideal. Schumacher crashed heavily in Saudi Arabia and Monaco, where he literally blew his monocoque in half. Each of these accidents cost Haas roughly one million dollars, and it was at that exact time that his future in F1 was highly speculated.
So he scored his first points in the UK and Austria, after which his performances stabilized and Schumacher is now delivering much more stable results.
As for his future, however, he has a very important few weeks ahead of him as Haas must decide on Schumacher’s contract. It expires at the end of this season and, as Haas boss Guenther Steiner has already confirmed, there has been no word on an extension.
However, in an exclusive interview with Racing News 365, Steiner explained that no negotiations have yet begun due to Schumacher being linked with a seat at Aston Martin.
Steiner’s statement
“Actually I don’t even know what Mick has done, we haven’t spoken to him about a contract for next year. He hasn’t spoken to us and we haven’t spoken to him, so we want to see what happens,” Steiner said in that interview.
“The Aston Martin thing happened very quickly, so nobody had time to think about it. But there were rumours that he (Schumacher) might head there to replace Vettel. But that possibility quickly disappeared,” he explains.
Steiner also confirmed that the decision on Schumacher’s future will be made jointly with the Ferrari team, as Haas is working with the Italian marque. The final decision will be announced by the Italian Grand Prix on 11 September at the latest.
