West Ham made it through the opening round of the new Premier League season, winning at Newcastle. There were six goals, the Hammers were twice down, but in the second half they turned the tide in their favour.
Tomas Soucek had the first chance of the game in the second minute, but his header was deflected out for a corner by midfielder Miguel Almirón. It was the home side who took their first chance, with Callum Wilson netting after Allan Saint-Maximin’s centre.
The equalizer came in the 19th minute, as Aaron Cresswell’s shot hit the back post. In the 23rd minute, Wilson tried a cross and Lukasz Fabianski had his work cut out to catch the ball. Newcastle were angry, three minutes later Almirón hit the crossbar.
By the 40th minute, the crowd was roaring. Jacob Murphy found the centre of the box and his header gave Fabianski no chance. Said Benrahma’s shot just missed the back post by inches capped an excellent first half.
West Ham equalised for the second time just after the change of sides. Michail Antonio found Benrahma and his header split the net. Antonio rang the bar with a header in the 62nd minute, but then one of his teammates was fouled in the whitewash and a penalty was whistled.
Antonio missed the penalty, but Souček made no mistake. Five minutes later, the Hammers celebrated for the fourth time, with a cross from Antonio to Freddie Woodman. In the end, the Magpies tried to at least reduce the deficit, but Emil Kraft’s volley was knocked down for a corner by the visitors’ defence.
After that, Soucek and co. kept the result and after the 4:2 win they take all three points to London.
