Deliverance. That’s what you might call Harry Maguire’s transfer. And not just for himself, but for the fans and coaches. The much-mocked stopper simply had no future at Manchester United and a move to West Ham is a suitable solution for all parties.

Harry Maguire caught the eye in a Leicester jersey. He performed so well that Manchester United shelled out £80 million for him, making him the most expensive stopper in the world.

But the performances certainly didn’t match it. In the beginning, Maguire played his best, but in the last few seasons he started to make mistake after mistake. He became the butt of a lot of jokes from the fans, which didn’t help.

The mystery, however, is that he performed brilliantly for the England national team and coach Gareth Southgate built on him. But he never brought the performance from Albion to Manchester. So leaving is the best solution for all parties.

Maguire’s new destination will be West Ham. That could be a great fit for both parties. After all, the Hammers don’t practice combination football like United, but rely on power football with a lot of duels and kicking balls.

This could suit Maguire, negating his mistakes at the back and allowing his strengths such as head play and duelling to shine through. According to Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have already agreed on a transfer fee of £35 million. Only the personal terms remain to be finalised.

West Ham’s next signing is James Ward-Prowse. Southampton’s central midfielder is expected to cost around 30 million euros, just like Maguire. Saints initially didn’t want to sell their key prop after relegation to League Two, but Ward-Prowse would be a waste for League Two.

West Ham have been the only Premier League team so far not to bring in a single reinforcement. Now, however, he has hit the ground running in a week. On Tuesday it agreed a deal with Ajax for the transfer of Edson Alvarez for £35m. Now he’s bringing in two more league-tested names.
