West Ham desperately need a productive player. But why should we expect a big improvement in results?
A sea of bad luck and missed chances crushed West Ham United, who lost again on Sunday. This time they failed to win the game against Everton, which was decided by a single goal. So it’s the same old story, which is starting to bother the fans. This league season has been celebrated with only three goals scored.
A sea of bad luck and missed chances crushed West Ham United, who lost again on Sunday. This time they failed to win the game against Everton, which was decided by a single goal. So it’s the same old story, which is starting to bother the fans. This league season has been celebrated with only three goals scored.
Match after match, they watch their favourites throw away chance after chance. The Tottenham and Chelsea games were typical examples. On both occasions, David Moyes’ charges could have reached three points, but only one came from it.
Together with Wolves (3 goals scored), the Hammers are the worst team in terms of goals scored. They are kept afloat mainly by a solid defence that has conceded 9 goals. That in itself is an average number in the current Premier League season.
However, considering that they have duels with Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea, and the upstart Brighton under their belt so far, this is a very good result in my opinion.
It’s not surprising, therefore, that the highest rated players are primarily those in charge of defensive duties. The best ever is Tomas Soucek, who also scored one of the three goals.
Why can we expect a big improvement in results?
As mentioned, West Ham have taken a lot of bad luck from the edge of the season. This is clearly illustrated by the xG statistic, according to which the players of the London team should have scored 7.03 goals. The difference of reality with xG is therefore 4.03 goals, which is the highest number of all.
Thus, the Hammers should have 9.01 points instead of 4 in this tally, which would put them currently in 8th place ahead of 9th place Manchester United. Except you don’t play for ifs and West Ham are one of three teams in the relegation zone.
The goals should be mainly taken care of by the duo of Michail Antonio and new 36million pound signing Gianluca Scamacca. While Antonio has managed to break through once, the 23-year-old Italian striker has not, at least not in the Premier League. In European Cups, he has made it 3 times in 4 games.
It is their ability to score goals that will be key to West Ham moving up the table. However, it is to be expected. Moyes has a lot of confidence in the London squad, quality players and the performances are also quite good, now all that is left is a bit of luck and more efficiency, the points will pile up then.
Now the players will have a national break, after which they will return to the league turf and West Ham will challenge another team that has a problem with scoring goals, namely the aforementioned Wolves. An ideal chance to score fully.
