West Ham United took on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final match. It was not a good night for the team from London, not only they lost 3:1, but they also lost Tomáš Souček.
The visitors from London were more active in the match, but their chances remained unused. Soucek had one dangerous shot, but it just missed the right post. The home team opened the scoring.
After half an hour of play, Perraud shot from long range and his shot went behind goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. Although the visitors continued to be the more active team, they failed to equalise before half-time.
In the 50th minute came an unfortunate moment for Tomáš Souček. He was hit unpleasantly in the face with an arm by Ibrahim Diallo. Soucek was forced to substitute because of a bloody face.
The Hammers managed to equalize after exactly one hour of play. Bowen forced a corner, Caballero headed the ball into Diop and Antonio swept the ball into the net to score his first goal since New Year’s Day.
The joy of the visitors, however, did not last long. Craig Dawson fouled Armando Broja in his own penalty area and after a review of the situation on the monitor, Ward-Prowse converted the subsequent penalty kick.
At the end of the match, the Albanian Broja crowned the home side’s victory, as he tackled three West Ham defenders and hit a shot to the far post.
West Ham can now concentrate on the league games, in which they still hold out hope for the cup places and also for the Europa League knockout battles.
Southampton, on the other hand, are nursing hopes of repeating last season’s success of reaching the semi-finals.
