Wenger vs Arteta: I don’t believe in rotating goalkeepers, I like Ramsdale

If anyone hasn’t let his goalkeepers stand still in recent years, it’s definitely Mikel Arteta. Injuries caused the first rotation, specifically in his first season as coach in 2019/20. It’s not for nothing that Neal Maupay’s injury to Bernd Leno is said to have won Lionel Messi two Ballon d’Ors.
In fact, Emiliano Martinez started catching for essentially the first time in his career. He secured an FA Cup triumph and left for Aston Villa after the end of the season. He subsequently became Argentina’s number one goalkeeper and made a significant contribution to their triumphs in the Copa America and the World Cup.
The season after Martinez’s departure, Leno captained the side, but surprisingly Aaron Ramsdale came in for the 2021/22 season. This move was not understood by the fans, but they quickly fell in love with the energetic Englishman. Two great seasons and no one expected anything to change.
But Arteta has struck again. At Brentford, he took a liking to David Raya, whom he brought in on loan with an option. He was a number two from the start, but all of a sudden he is currently catching all the games. And he’s making quite a lot of mistakes, like in the London derby with Chelsea.
“I don’t trust the rotation of goalkeepers. In general I don’t believe in confusion when it comes to the hierarchy of goalkeepers. It doesn’t work,” Arsene Wenger said, according to the Mirror.
Arteta defuses the situation by saying he believes Raya is not the permanent number one. The reason he currently prefers him is because of his ability to play the ball. However, he has already made a few mistakes there as well, which opponents are already noticing. On the other hand, against Sheffield at the weekend, the Spanish goalkeeper showed how dangerous he can be on the break.
But the fans are asking for Ramsdale. They love his emotions and gestures, acrobatic saves from big games and the like. The goalkeeper himself is scared of the future, logically he is not sure of his place in the national team. But he has the support of the club’s coaching legend.
“Personally, I like Ramsdale. I would not give up if I were him. I believe he has a chance to get back into the Arsenal squad,” Wenger added.
