Wembanyama wants to make the playoffs with the San Antonio Spurs in his first season!

Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in this year’s NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs, has no easy goals ahead of his first season in the best basketball league. He thinks he can help his team qualify for the playoffs right away.

San Antonio hasn’t made the playoffs in five years

The last time the Spurs showed up in the playoffs was in the 2018/2019 season. In that season, they finished seventh in the Western Conference and ran into the Denver Nuggets in the first round. It was a very even series, where San Antonio eventually fell 3: 4 on the road.

A year later, the Spurs finished 11th in the Western Conference. In the 2020/2021 season, they clinched a play-in spot thanks to their 10th place finish. However, they ran into the Memphis Grizzlies, who knocked them out in the first round 100:96, so they did not qualify for the main elimination round again.

The next year it was a similar situation. Again, 10th place and an end in the first preliminary round, this time they lost to the New Orleans Pelicans 103:113. And last year San Antonio became the worst team in the Western Conference, only the Detroit Pistons were worse in the whole NBA.

Even with that ranking, however, they were fortunate to get the first pick in the draft lottery, which allowed them to select Victor Wembanyama into their ranks. With the French talent only 19 years old, Spurs fans are optimistic that they could make it to the playoffs again after a long wait.

The number one pick shares the same dreams with the fans

After his selection in this year’s draft, Victor Wembanyama has already undergone many interviews and uttered many things. The fans liked him the most when he talked about how he believes in qualifying for the playoffs.

His main goal in his first year in the NBA in a San Antonio Spurs jersey is to make the playoffs, he probably won’t win right away, but of course he wants to put on a championship ring someday.

“I don’t feel any pressure. This is just part of life as a basketball player, it’s a phase. I have high goals, but I’m not afraid of them, ” Victor Wembanyama told Canal+ France.

“I want to go to the playoffs. It’s best for the future if we don’t know what’s coming. It’s very difficult to get a championship ring, but I’m patient, I know it will happen one day,” the French number one pick said confidently.

The San Antonio Spurs will play their first game of the 2023/2024 NBA season against the Dallas Mavericks on October 25. We can look forward to the youngster being welcomed by a star like Luka Doncic.
