Welsh back in the Premier League? The second division team makes an interesting comeback
In the past decade, at least one Welsh team has played in the Premier League fairly regularly. However, both Swansea and Cardiff have been drowning in the second tier for the last few years and have not been able to go up. In any case, Cardiff have made a bold move in the transfer market this transfer window.
In the past decade, at least one Welsh team has played in the Premier League fairly regularly. However, both Swansea and Cardiff have been drowning in the second tier for the last few years and have not been able to go up. In any case, Cardiff have made a bold move in the transfer market this transfer window.
The years when Cardiff used to play Premier League are gone. The last time it appeared among the elite was in the 2018/19 season, when it was relegated to the Championship from 18th place along with Fulham and Huddersfield. He missed out on 17th Brighton by two points.
Since then, the Welsh side has been languishing in the second tier. Last year, it barely even survived, finishing 21st out of 24 entrants. If they hadn’t picked up seven points in the last five rounds, they would be in League One this year.
The club has therefore called in a new coach, who has set in motion a drastic rebuilding of the team. Turkish coach Erol Bulut brought in experienced stopper and Greek international Dimitrios Goutas from Sivasspor, who had played for Olympiakos, for example.
Aaron Ramsey is a promising addition. One of the modern legends of Welsh football has made his biggest impact at Arsenal. He reached the Europa League final with Rangers the season before last, and the Conference League quarter-finals this season with Nice.
Karlan Grant has come into the attack. The speedy English striker with Premier League experience was a guest at Cardiff last season, now he has arrived as a free agent from West Bromwich. He will add experience to the team as they fight for promotion.
Alongside Ramsey, Yakou Méïté will also come into the midfield. The Ivory Coast international has been kicking for Reading for the last six Championship seasons, but they were relegated this year, so a transfer was the logical choice for him.
All four reinforcements came for free, which has optimistic fans happy. All they ask for is one more, a proper goalkeeper. After that, they will hope that the club will play in the first half of the table and maybe next year they will attack a return to the elite.
