Weghorst? Manchester United are playing him at ten, the presenter leans on the striker
Wout Weghorst came to Manchester United in the winter to strengthen the attack, but his performances have been criticized a lot so far. And although Erik ten Hag defends him, the Dutch marksman is facing some pretty harsh criticism.
Wout Weghorst came to Manchester United in the winter to strengthen the attack, but his performances have been criticized a lot so far. And although Erik ten Hag defends him, the Dutch marksman is facing some pretty harsh criticism.
When Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag was certainly relieved. However, at the same time, a gap was created at the tip of the attack that needed to be filled somehow.
Towards the end of the winter transfer window, it’s hard to look for a star that you can count on for several years to come. Logically, teams don’t want to let go of such prized players and you have to look for players from the second string.
So United have pointed to Wout Weghorst, a nearly two-metre tall striker with a past at Besiktas, Burnley or Wolfsburg.
Coach ten Hag gives him perhaps unexpectedly a lot of confidence, Weghorst has started all 10 games in the starting lineup since his arrival. In the last three games, against Leeds, Barcelona and Leicester, he has played the full 90 minutes.
Weghorst has hit the net once, against Nottingham in the EFL Cup. He is still waiting for his first goal in the Premier League.
The Dutch coach praised his native for the work done in the match and how he was able to keep the ball, but there is a different opinion among the experts about Weghorst’s contribution to the team.
“You play with ten men every weekend if he is in the line-up. He doesn’t do anything to justify the starting lineup. Let’s be honest,” longtime beIN Sports host Richard Keys lashed out at Weghorst.
And he is not alone in this opinion. Weghorst’s performance has been widely criticized by fans and other experts. The 30-year-old striker is on loan at Old Trafford from Burnley, it is questionable whether he will ask for a permanent transfer.
