Manchester United’s weekend match with Liverpool resulted in a 0:7 scoreline and one of the Red Devils’ worst defeats. Apart from the disappointment of United fans, the duel also brought one very interesting moment.
The footage that appeared on social media shows Wout Weghorst reaching for the Liverpool logo before the game. And this sparked a wave of negative reactions in the Red Devils camp towards the Dutch striker.
That’s also why Weghorst decided to react to the whole situation on his Instagram profile, where he defended his behaviour in a post.
“Normally I don’t respond to the media, but this time it makes sense. Because you Manchester United fans are worth it. I know from the national team that Virgil van Dijk always touches the logo. My only aim was to stop him doing that and to throw him off before the game.”
“As a child I always supported FC Twente and now, as a proud United player, my commitment to the club cannot be questioned,” Weghorst added.
He also revisited Sunday’s game, where his plan to unsettle Virgil van Dijk didn’t quite work: “ It was a bad day, for all of us. We will bounce back together and achieve our goal for this season.”
Manchester United will be on the pitch again on Thursday in the Europa League when they take on Spain’s Betis.
