On Wednesday, five teams – Manchester City, PSG, Sporting Lisbon, Inter Milan and Real Madrid – secured qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League. On the other hand, Atlético have to work hard in the last round. How did Wednesday’s battles go?
Group A
The fifth round match between Manchester City and Paris went better for the home team. They turned the game around and won 2-1. Leipzig, meanwhile, blasted Bruges 5-0 to win the competition for the first time this season.
The promotion places are therefore a given. Manchester will be seeded in the knockout stage, Paris will go through from second place. Leipzig have the same number of points as fourth-placed Brugge and have the advantage of a better match-up before the last game.
Group B
Liverpool, even with a weakened squad, gave Porto no chance, beating them 2-0 at Anfield. The group was even more confused in the second match, in which AC Milan defeated Atlético Madrid by a single goal in the 89th minute.
Atleti dropped to last place in the table, one point behind AC. One point ahead of them is Porto. Porto and Atlético will face each other for second place, Milan would have to win against the Reds to advance.
Group C
Dortmund unexpectedly lost 1:3 to Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League. Ajax, after a 2-1 win over Besiktas, remain 100 percent and move on from first place, Sporting from second.
Group D
Also in Group D we already know the two qualifiers. Real Madrid and Inter Milan will share the top spot in two weeks after 3: 0 and 2: 0 wins over Sheriff and Shakhtar Donetsk respectively, with Sheriff playing in the Europa League in the spring.
