After Wednesday’s Champions League matches, we know fifteen of the sixteen participants in the knockout phase. Who has advanced from a thrilling Group G and why Atalanta and Villarreal did not play?
Group E
In Group E, the favourites took the three points. Bayern didn’t allow Barcelona, who were fighting for promotion, a single chance at home and beat them 3-0, while Benfica Lisbon beat Ukrainian Dynamo Kiev 2-0.
Benfica moved into second place with the win and will play in the Champions League play-offs in the spring. Bayern are now in first place. Barcelona, on the other hand, will unusually only play in the Europa League.
Group F
Only one match was played in the “efku”. The clash for the second place between Atalanta and Villarreal was postponed due to a snowstorm, while Manchester United drew with Young Boys Bern.
Group G
In Group G, the standings remained unchanged. Lille beat Wolfsburg 3-1 to move up from first place, while Salzburg, who beat Sevilla at home, are the unseeded team. The Spanish club will play in the Europa League in the spring, the cup season is definitely over for the German side.
Group H
The seemingly decided Group H regrouped on Wednesday. Chelsea drew at Zenit St. Petersburg with Magomed Ozdoev’s goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time, while Juventus were lucky to beat Malmö 1:0 at home.
The Blues are very sorry about the goal from the very end of the game, because Juventus got the first place thanks to it, while Chelsea have to settle for the role of the unseeded team. Zenit are relegated to the EL.
