Wednesday at the US Open rain-soaked, Czechs 50 percent
The third day in Flushing Meadows brought victories in the women’s part of the bracket, mostly by the favourites, mostly in two sets. How did the Czech tennis players do? And who surprised in the men’s section? Here’s another recap of the match day at the US Open.
The third day in Flushing Meadows brought victories in the women’s part of the bracket, mostly by the favourites, mostly in two sets. How did the Czech tennis players do? And who surprised in the men’s section? Here’s another recap of the match day at the US Open.
Let’s start this time with the men’s category, where Casper Ruud had to pack his bags. The No. 8 seed from Norway fell to Van De Zandschlup of the Netherlands. He was joined by Chile’s Christian Garin, who was stopped by Henri Laaksonen. In the same breath, however, it should be added that both Garin and Ruud are rather clay players.
If we don’t count the withdrawal of the seeded Grigor Dimitrov, the other favourites advanced without any major problems. For example, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas or Argentine number one Diego Schwartzman are the next to go.
Among the women, Czech eyes were on Barbora Krejcikova and Marketa Vondrousova. The silver medallist from Tokyo was the first to take the court. Vondroušová’s opponent was Russia’s Kasatkina and it was a very even match. The Czech won the first set 6::3, but then unfortunately she lost the next two sets 4::6 and this year at the US Open she finishes in the second round.
Barbora Krejcikova is next. The world number nine had to fight the rain, the home crowd and even a change of court, but none of them broke the French Open winner. In one hour and 22 minutes, the Czech number two can look forward to facing the unseeded Russian Rakhimova after winning 6:3 and 6:1.
Four more Czechs will be in action on Thursday. At least one of them will advance, as the Czech derby between Petra Kvitova and Kristyna Pliskova awaits. Karolina Pliskova and Katerina Siniakova will also play.
