Denmark is eliminated from the European Championships after falling to Germany. The game was suspended for 20 minutes in the first half due to a heavy thunderstorm. Denmark’s coach welcomed the interruption, as he was there when lightning struck one of the players.
The European Championships are played in relatively high temperatures, so it is not surprising to see some thunderstorms. The biggest one was on Saturday night.
The match between Denmark and Germany in the semi-finals offered us some nice football, but 10 minutes before the end of the first half the referee had to stop the match. The reason was the weather.
There was a huge cloud over Dortmund, from which masses of water were coming out, and there was also huge lightning. The referee couldn’t do otherwise and no one doubted that it was the right decision.
Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmad welcomed the interruption as he has had unpleasant experiences with lightning in football. “I wasn’t worried, I was mainly concerned about the safety of the players. Yes, I was there when the lightning struck one of our players.
Now the lightning appeared right above the stadium in Dortmund. I saw how my players reacted. It was right to stop the match,” Hjulmand said after the loss to Germany.
The incident happened 15 years ago when Nordsjaelland footballer Jonathan Richter ended up in a coma after being struck by lightning. He survived but had to have his leg amputated less than two weeks later.
