Mattia Binotto officially resigned as Ferrari team boss on Tuesday. It should be noted, the fifty-three-year-old Lausanne native was the boss of the Italian stable for four years, while Binotto was at Ferrari for a total of 28 years.
His departure will undoubtedly mark the end of a great era, with the official date of his departure from the Scuderia set for December 31.
2022 season
After the opening three Grands Prix of the 2022 season, Ferrari was clearly headed for a title fight. And not only in the Teams’ Championship, but also in the Constructors’ Cup. But then came a series of driving errors, very poor strategic decisions and also reliability issues.
Binotto didn’t help much with his statements either. He also annoyed his own fans, or rather Ferrari fans, several times. As a result of all this, Ferrari chairman John Elkann lost confidence in Binotto.
This was despite the fact that Charles Leclerc eventually took the final second place in the drivers’ championship.
It should be added, Ferrari as a team ended the season in second place, but with a significant loss to the first Red Bull and finally with a not so huge lead over the third Mercedes. A very turbulent season for the team from Maranello.
Domenicali’s statement
“Of course, when you are in Ferrari and you finish second, it is a result that is not enough. I was in the same position many years ago and I want him (Binotto) to stay focused and confident,” Domenicali explained in an interview with Sky Sports F1.
“I don’t want to judge the dynamics of the team, but I certainly want to wish him all the best for the future. I really hope Ferrari find the right solution to stay on track and focus on the next job because they have made a lot of progress since 2020,” the F1 president continued.
“We need Ferrari to be competitive, to have a good, strong team with strong drivers to fight with the others. I am sure that in 2023 there will be more drivers and teams fighting for the top positions – that is my dream,” he concluded.
