Manchester United visit Bayern Munich in their first Champions League group stage match. However, they did not take any points from the Allianz Arena, thanks to a big mistake by goalkeeper André Onana. He apologised to the English fans after the game.

Manchester United entered the match with Bayern Munich quite solidly, not letting the home side have any chances during the first 25 minutes.

But in the 28th minute came a moment that André Onana would not put behind him. The Cameroonian goalkeeper let Leroy Sané’s shot go behind him, which was neither well placed nor very incisive.

We wrote about the moment in detail in a previous article, but Onana realized immediately after the goal that this goal was coming for him. In his post-match interview, he apologized for his mistake.

“They didn’t create any chances, it was their first shot on goal, I made a mistake and sent the team down,” said Onana, quoted by ESPN.

And in the end, it was the key shot of the game. Sané opened the match’s scoring account, four minutes after which Serge Gnabry also scored. The Red Devils had to make up for the loss for the rest of the game.

Manchester United didn’t get a point. It’s my fault, says Onana

Rasmus Højlund reduced the gap to a single goal in the 49th minute, but four minutes later Harry Kane converted a penalty.

Three more goals were then scored in the final minutes of the game. Manchester United reduced the deficit to 2:3 in the 88th minute thanks to Casemiro, but again the deficit did not last more than four minutes. Mathys Tel struck in the second minute of stoppage time.

Then Casemiro made the final score 3:4 for the Red Devils, but the visitors could not manage anything else. Manchester United did not even get a point in Group A and are in last place after the first round.

“We fought until the end, but I have to admit that we didn’t win because of me. I still have something to prove. My start was not that good, not the way I wanted. It’s difficult. It was an opportunity to bounce back from the bottom and yes, it’s a tough time and we have to stick together and learn from our mistakes,” Onana admits.

“It’s my responsibility, I’m the reason we didn’t win and I have to learn from it,” concluded the Manchester United goalkeeper.
