Christophe Galtier, the PSG coach, has a big problem on his conscience. The French coach was in charge of OGC Nice last season and he complained that he had “too many blacks and Muslims” in his team.

Galtier should have complained to Nice’s sporting director Julian Fournier about the composition of the team. He subsequently emailed his superior with all the issues, but the email was leaked to journalist Romain Molina of RMC Sport.

The comments were due to occur in August 2021, when Galtier took over Nice. “Galtier told me: I was in a restaurant yesterday and people were complaining that we have a team full of black people… Julien, you have to realize what kind of city we’re in. We’re in Jacques Médecin’s town and our team doesn’t match what people want. Nor what I want,” the email said, among other things.

Galtier was also quoted as saying that he “can’t have so many blacks and Muslims on the team.” Why Galtier didn’t want a player of that religion on the roster became clear later.

He asked the Nice players not to fast during Ramadan. Some players obeyed, others did not, and the team had a dispute about it.

Galtier also allegedly passed on his influence to his adopted son, John Valovic-Galtier. The end of the email in which Fournier talks about the meeting with the coach’s son is dedicated to him.

“I asked him what was going on and he explained to me that this team was not to his father’s liking, that it couldn’t go on like this. I asked him to explain it to me so I could understand it better, and he said, ‘You’ve built a team of scumbags, ‘” Fournier says.

I asked him to elaborate and he added: ‘There are only black people here and half your team is in the mosque on Friday afternoon…’ I told Mr John Valovic-Galtier I was outraged by his remarks and asked him to leave my office immediately,” Fournier writes.

Galtier left Nice after just a year to join PSG. When journalists asked Fournier in September what was behind his disputes with Galtier, they got a rather harsh answer.

If I tell the real reasons why we fought, because that’s the right word, Christophe Galtier will never coach again, neither in France nor in Europe,” Fournier said at the time.
