Union Berlin is writing a beautiful story. For the first time in the history of the Bundesliga, they finished in the top four and thus qualified for the Champions League.
Fate has assigned them a very interesting group with Real Madrid, Napoli and Braga. In their first match among the elite, the Union will take a look at one of the most sacred stadiums in the world.
The Santiago Bernabéu will host the first match of the new Champions League season today and while it will be an ordinary match for the home side, it will be a unique experience for the visitors.
“I think both the players and I as a coach don’t know how many times we will be able to play here and have this great experience. We also have impressive stadiums in the Bundesliga, but to play against such a great team in such a famous stadium is something special, ” Union coach Urs Fischer expressed his respect for Real at the press conference.
At the same time, he assured everyone that his team did not come to Madrid just to enjoy the match. They would like to win a point in the Spanish capital.
“We have to play mature football. We want to keep the ball, if we just defend it will be extremely difficult for us. A mature way of playing means the boys will know how to use the spaces properly, how to win duels. They will have to make a lot of good decisions,” Fischer said.
But at the same time, the Berlin coach believes he has found a way to hurt Real Madrid
“We’ve analysed a lot of games. The one against Real Sociedad, the one against Celta, and the friendly with Juventus. We found some weaknesses. But there’s no need to talk about the quality of their team. We need a compact and well-organised team,” added the Union Berlin coach.
Czech midfielder Alex Král can also be expected in the German team’s line-up. It will be his debut in the Champions League as well. He will be up against probably the best midfield in the world at the moment with Jude Bellingham, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouameni.
